A small taste of Africa

Anna’s boyfriend Em who is doing VSA in Tanzania in Africa came to visit, unfortunately they only had one night but we had fun we went out for dinner and then all crashed at my place, the next morning we went to the market.

This photo is taken just down the road from my house on the way to the market close to Rach (another VSA volunteer’s house) Em is wearing a Vietnamese hat he bought for 25c and a kroma which is like a khmer skirt for men, basically just a piece of material wrapped, but a very intricate tying system is used!

And this is Rach’s house, it is a traditional wooden house, Rach lives upstairs and the Khmer family downstairs.

At the market we ate bean spring rolls and noodles and green stuff for brekkie then em decided to hire a cyclo and try and get people to go for rides with him. He only managed three customers in 30 mins but it was a lot of fun and we got some good video footage!

Just down the road from the market.

And this is Svay Rieng market you can buy nearly everything here, from watches to shampoo to veges and meat and other packaged goods, its pretty busy and the meat section smells awful but it’s a great place!
Anna and I at a coffee shop, they are really just places with umbrellas and seats but the make the best ‘iced coffee with the milk from the breast of a cow’ is the translation of the khmer phrase! You can also get sugar cane juice and fruit smoothies and coconuts too.

And last off on our way home we ran into some kids playing a game with marbles on the side of the road, basically its 100riel (2c) buy in and you make your money look like a tent, you take your marble and flick it buy bending your fingers back very far, if your marble knocks your own money over then you take it and everyone else’s money, if it knocks someone else’s then you keep going.

Em did not have much luck with the finger flick technique so unfortunately he lost three games in a row and gave up due to the large crowd forming and laughing!
